2016 Cross Country Season Pre-Release

The St. John’s Blujay Cross Country team opened its second season with the Concordia Invitational on Thursday afternoon that took place at the Concordia Country Club. The Blujays have returning runners with David Lutgen (JR), John Paul Knappert (JR), Camryn Winkel (SO), and Laura Meyer (SO). New team members for 2016 include Drake Kee (SR), Adam Bates (JR), Ethan Rinaldo (JR), Brandon Bates (FR), Braden Dameron (FR), Jacob Gengler (FR), Jadyn Rosebaugh (FR), Sarah Gunderson (FR), and Ellen Knappert (FR). The boys’ varsity team is currently made up of Kee, Lutgen, A. Bates, B. Bates, Dameron, Rosebaugh, and Winkel. The three girls are all varsity, but five are required to place as a team.

David Lutgen flew to a first place finish with a personal best time of 17:21; more than a full minute ahead of second place Kaleb Rookstool of Clay Center. Adam Bates had an outstanding race as well, finishing fourth with an 18:34; narrowly edged out of the top three by Rand Lohrentz of Buhler who had a time of 18:32. Brandon Bates was the next Blujay finisher in 12th with a 19:41, followed by Drake Kee in 20th with a 20:23. The fifth man for St. John’s was Braden Dameron with a 21:52.  Jadyn Rosebaugh and Camryn Winkel were the final two varsity runners. John Paul Knappert and Ethan Rinaldo made up the JV team for today’s race. Clay Center won the team title with 60 points, followed by McPherson with 78. St. John’s boys were third place as a team, also with 78 points. The tie-breaker with McPherson came down to the 6th runner for each team, and St. John’s was narrowly edged out. Other teams competing were Buhler (4th), Beloit (5th), Republic County (6th), Ellsworth (7th), Minneapolis, and Concordia.

The St. John’s girls competed well in the first race of the season with Sarah Gunderson and Laura Meyer finishing 47th and 48th respectively, followed closely by Ellen Knappert in 52nd. It was a beautiful day for a cross country race, and the Blujays boys and girls are looking forward to a fun season. The next meet will be held in Stockton on September 8th.
